Frequently Asked Questions

Some Questions You Might Have About Flooring, Installation and Refinishing

General Questions
Why should I choose a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floors are beautiful, long lasting and durable. The natural patterns and colors that are found in natural pieces of wood provide a very inviting and comfortable living environment.

I have heard that a cleaner home environment is provided by a hardwood floor. Is that true?

Yes, absolutely. Carpet attracts and stores many allergenic spores, unhealthy microbes, animal dander, fungi, bacteria and dust mites. Each time you vacuum, these irritants get dispersed.

How long does a hardwood floor usually last?

A hardwood floor can last your entire lifetime if it is maintained properly. You need to replace the average carpet every 10-12 years.

What are most popular hardwoods used for floors?

For homes, the most popular hardwoods are red oak and white oak.

Maintenance Questions
Is it true that you need to control the humidity levels for a hardwood floor?

You should keep the humidity inside your home at around 45%. If your house is very dry during heating season, it will result in your floor shrinking. This will result in linear cracks being formed in between the slats of the flooring. However, if it is too humid, that can cause the floor to swell, which could result in the boards crowning or cupping.

My hardwood floors could really use a face lift. They are very lackluster. Can I do the renovation work on my own?

We strongly recommend that you have our professional floor refurbishers do the work for you. We have all of the necessary experience and equipment in order to ensure that the job is done correctly and efficiently the first time around. Our results are also guaranteed.

Installation Questions

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

During our initial consultation, we can provide you with an accurate cost and time estimate for your hardwood floor installation and/or refinishing project.

How long does it take to complete the sanding or finishing process?

Sanding and finishing time is dependent on the square footage that is being refinished and the humidity levels in the house. For example, sanding and finishing for a 700 square foot home may only take three days to complete whereas 5000 square feet will take longer.

Does the sanding process create a lot of dust?

No – we use our state-of-the-art dustless sanding system from Bona. Our process makes for a better finished project and leaves you with a healthier environment after the project. Our equipment virtually eliminates airborne dust, which minimizes clean-up headaches and reduces airborne particulates that can be harmful to your health.

After a surface coat is applied, how long does is normally take for the floor to dry?

It usually takes 4-6 hours for a water base poly coat to dry, and 8-12 hours for an oil base poly coat to dry. We can advise you on the appropriate finish for your floor.

During the finishing process, what temperature should I maintain my house at?

The ideal temperature is 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit. If your house is too cold or too hot, it may cause the finish to not dry properly, which will cause delays for the job.

When will I be able to put my furniture back into place?

We can move the furniture back into place after the last coat of finish has been applied and has thoroughly dried (and we make sure there are protective felt pads underneath all of your furniture). Keep any large area rugs off of the floor for about 30 days. We recommend placing a breathable, perforated rubber pad under the rug.

Will I end up with a shiny floor?

You can choose a high gloss, semi gloss or satin finish for your floor.

Do you move appliances or furniture?

Yes, we will move heavy furniture – couches, chairs, etc. We can review the details during our initial consultation and confirm them when your project begins..

Will I be able to stay in my house while the floor is being sanded?

It all depends on the work involved and the layout of your house. If an entire level of your home is being refinished, you may have to move out for several days, or stay in another part of the house. We can discuss the details during our initial consultation.
